It has been 12 years since Sal Mangione wrote the second edition of his Physical Diagnosis Secrets . As expected, over this time we have seen changes in medical knowledge and certain practices (such as prophylactic antibiotics for dental procedures in low-risk cardiac conditions). We have also seen some newer discoveries and improvements in the art and science of the physical examination. With text and images courtesy of Michael Wagner, this third edition now includes point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for almost every chapter, reflecting the growth and increased acceptance of this modality as an important bedside tool in the clinician's evaluation. In doing so, we hope to dispel the false dichotomy often created between technology and the physical exam, promote the inclusion of POCUS as a vital clinical skill, and highlight the uses and benefits of blending traditional bedside skills with newer techniques for patients, teachers, and students. |
